Accumulation of trace metals in freshwater macroinvertebrates across metal contamination gradients

چکیده
Historical mining activities cause widespread, long-term trace metal contamination of freshwater ecosystems. However, measuring bioavailability has proven difficult, because it depends on many factors, not least concentrations in water, sediment and habitat. Simple tools are needed to assess bioavailabilities. The use biomonitors been widely advocated provide a realistic measure. To date there have few attempts identify ubiquitous patterns accumulation within between at geographical scales relevant contamination. Here we address this through nationwide collection (species Gammarus, Leuctra, Baetis, Rhyacophila, Hydropsyche ) from 99 English Welsh stream sites spanning gradient high low loading. study tested for inter-biomonitor variation body burden, congruence amongst accumulations metals taxa across the gradient. In general, significant differences burden occurred taxa: Gammarus sp. was most different compared with insect biomonitors. Bivariate relationships reflected profiles environment. Strong correlations some suggested also influenced by physiological pathways. burdens As, Cu, Mn Pb were highly consistent. Our data show that irrespective taxonomic or ecological differences, is commonality response taxa, indicating one more could consistent measures bioavailability. • Quantification contaminant gradients. Accumulation of heavy metals in freshwater molluscs.
Heavy metals in the aquatic environment have to date come mainly from naturally occurring geochemical materials. However, this has been enhanced by human activity such as gold mining in the case of heavy metal pollution in Sg Sarawak Kanan. The high suspended solid loads in the river have quite efficiently removed most soluble metals from the water and trapped them in the bottom sediment. Three...
متن کاملThe contamination status of trace metals in Sinop coast of the Black Sea, Turkey
The concentrations of some heavy metals in sediment from the Sinop coasts of the Black Sea were measured to monitor metal pollution in 2013. The distribution of the heavy metals in sediments of the Black Sea shows a variable pattern. The objectives of the present study were to elucidate the distribution heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, Hg and Co in sediment from Sinop co...
متن کاملContamination from an affluent of Furnas reservoir by trace metals.
This study aims to determine concentrations and characterize trace metals distribution in an affluent of Furnas reservoir, Alfenas-MG. Water and sediment samples were taken monthly, 2010/10-2011/07 in five sites of Córrego do Pântano for subsequent determination of Pb, Cd and Zn levels by chemical analysis. The stream studied is in disagreement with Brazilian legislation for Class II water bodi...
متن کاملVariable survival across low pH gradients in freshwater fish species.
A series of 14 day experiments was conducted on five common New Zealand fish species (redfin bully Gobiomorphus huttoni, inanga Galaxias maculatus, brown trout Salmo trutta, longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii and koaro Galaxias brevipinnis) to assess the effect of pH on survival and changes in body mass. No species survived in water of pH <4 although there was 100% survival of all adults at pH ...
متن کاملToxic Effects of Heavy Metals on Plant Growth and Metal Accumulation in Maize (Zea maysL.)
Background: A pot experiment was conducted to determine the toxic effects of some heavy metals on the plant growth and seed yield of maize (Zea mays L.). Materials and Metheds: Heavy metals Mn, Pb, Cd, Cr and Co individually and in combinations were added as chloride salts in solutions to the pots before sowing. The test plants for were harvested after 80 days of germination and evaluated f...
